Local knowledge reigned supreme today at one of the world’s most revered waves, as 16-year-olds Westen Hirst (Lakey Peak) and Jasmine Studer (Kuta) carved their names into surfing history—claiming victory at the 2025 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang in flawless 6-foot barrels.
Held only when conditions reach perfection, this year’s Rip Curl Cup delivered in full force. Crystal-clear barrels rolled through Bali’s Bukit Peninsula all day long, creating a dream canvas for Indonesia’s top surfers and a global lineup of elite invitees, including Mason Ho, Ivan Florence, Tosh Tudor, and Balaram Stack.
In the women’s final, Jasmine Studer left no doubt. She scored a perfect 10, backed it up with an 8.17, and held off a hard-charging Willow Hardy (AUS), who posted an impressive 9.00 and 8.33. The crowd witnessed some of the most progressive female barrel riding ever seen at Padang Padang.
“I’m so happy, I’m speechless. It’s the most surreal moment of my life,” Jasmine said after her win. “I loved surfing Padang with just five other girls—it was amazing. I didn’t think I’d make it out of that 10-point ride. When the spit hit me, I thought I was done. But I came out, and it was all just so unreal.”
The men’s final kicked off with fireworks, as Westen Hirst opened with a double barrel for 9.9, setting the tone early. Local favorite Ketut Agus was quiet through much of the final but roared back in the last 10 minutes with clean, technical tube rides, including a 9.8 in earlier rounds. However, Westen closed the door with a 7.33, locking in a total of 18.57—a dominant performance from start to finish.
“I’ve been surfing Padang since I was 10—or maybe even younger,” Westen said. “I got my first real barrel here. Now to win the Rip Curl Cup… it’s just crazy.”
