The swift response of the joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team once again proved crucial after a teenage hiker suffering from hypothermia on Mount Abang, Bangli, was successfully rescued on Saturday (February 21, 2026), despite challenging weather conditions.
Ni Putu Kuinandita (16), a student from Ubud, Gianyar, had started the hike at around 5:00 a.m. with five friends. While descending and reaching Post 2 of Pura Andong (approximately 1,700 meters above sea level), her condition suddenly deteriorated due to the cold, leaving her weak and unable to continue.
The Denpasar Search and Rescue Office received a report at 12:56 p.m. from another hiker, Nyoman Teja. Responding immediately, seven personnel from the Karangasem SAR Post were deployed to the location. Coordination was also carried out with the Kintamani Police, the Bangli Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), local guides, and the victim’s family to expedite the rescue process.
The joint SAR team began the search at approximately 2:40 p.m. under light rain and limited visibility of about 10 meters, conditions that complicated movement along the mountainous terrain.
At around 3:40 p.m., the victim was located at an altitude of 1,450 meters above sea level.
“Although she was experiencing hypothermia and weakness, the victim was still in stable condition when found,” said Field Coordinator Putu Handika Bhayangkara.
She was then evacuated down to the basecamp, arriving at the Mount Abang hiking post at approximately 4:15 p.m. Medical personnel from Kintamani Community Health Center (Puskesmas) immediately examined her before transferring her by ambulance to the Kintamani Health Center for further treatment.
The SAR operation involved personnel from the Karangasem SAR Post, Kintamani Police, local Babinsa and Bhabinkamtibmas officers, Kintamani Health Center, guides from Pokdarwis Abang Erawang Kintamani, local guides, as well as the victim’s friends and family.
The successful evacuation highlights the strong inter-agency coordination in ensuring public safety, particularly for outdoor and mountain tourism activities in Bali. TS-01
