Nuanu Creative City has reached a new milestone in its ecological journey with the release of 5,000 butterflies from 11 native Balinese species across its sustainable landscapes. More than a symbolic celebration, this initiative reflects Nuanu’s long-term commitment to restoring and sustaining natural habitats within its 44-hectare creative city.

Between July and August 2025, Nuanu gradually released thousands of butterflies, culminating in a landmark release of 3,000 butterflies on 24 August. To date, the city has successfully set free more than 11,000 butterflies, making this the largest release in Nuanu’s history.
Butterflies: Symbols of Beauty and Ecological Health
“Butterflies are not just beautiful; they are vital indicators of ecosystem health,” said Lev Kroll, CEO of Nuanu Creative City. “For us, butterflies shouldn’t exist only in books or be framed behind glass—they should fly freely for visitors, residents, and even our employees to encounter.
Our commitment goes beyond butterflies: our team, including insect specialists, is also working to bring back fireflies, dragonflies, plankton, and all the small heroes that make our nature—our Bali—even more beautiful.”
As natural pollinators, butterflies play a crucial role in sustaining biodiversity. Though delicate, with adult lifespans of only 5–14 days, they help thousands of flowering plants reproduce, strengthen food chains, and serve as living markers of a balanced ecosystem. Their flourishing presence confirms that Nuanu offers a thriving habitat for diverse forms of life.
Restoring Habitats, Building a Self-Regenerating Ecosystem
“Our core mission at Nuanu’s environmental team is to restore habitats for these small heroes and create a self-regenerating ecosystem within Nuanu,” said Agastya Yatra, Head of Environment at Nuanu Creative City.

“Releasing 5,000 butterflies is not merely symbolic; it demonstrates our readiness as a creative city to host them. In the coming years, we expect butterflies to repopulate with minimal human intervention, thriving and spreading naturally across Nuanu.” he Said.
All butterflies released today are native to Bali, including:
• Danaus chrysippus (Plain Tiger)
• Cethosia hypsea (Malayan Lacewing)
• Papilio peranthus (Swift Peacock Swallowtail) – which has become Nuanu’s iconic species, long associated with Bali’s coastal ecosystem.
A Living Classroom for People and Nature
To ensure the sustainability of this effort, Nuanu has cultivated host plants and diverse flowering species across its landscape, providing natural food sources and habitats for butterflies to reproduce. This integration transforms the release into more than just a ceremonial act—it establishes the foundation for long-term ecological regeneration.
Nuanu is also developing environmental education programs, inviting the public to experience nature up close and learn from it directly. With thousands of butterflies in flight, visitors gain a rare opportunity to feel the harmony between human creativity and the natural world.
