A fuel tanker truck carrying diesel, equipped with 10 wheels, overturned on Jln Ida Ketut Jelantik–Kertha Mandala Village, Abang District, Karangasem Regency, Monday night (2/6/2025), at 19:30 WITA. The truck driver, I Komang Sudarma (40), died instantly at the scene, trapped in the wreckage and difficult to evacuate. Meanwhile, the assistant (kernet) named Md Agus Saputra managed to escape safely.
The tragic incident occurred during their third fuel delivery run of the day. Upon reaching the Kangkaang area, near Kepun Pare, the driver told his assistant that the brakes had failed. “While the truck was still moving, the assistant attempted to grab the wheel chock from the back of the vehicle, but failed,” said I Nyoman Sidakarya, Head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office.
The truck continued moving towards Singaraja. Sidakarya explained that about 200 meters from the Kertha Mandala Village Office, the assistant found the truck had already overturned. When the brakes failed, the heavy vehicle went out of control and crashed into a coconut tree and an internet pole.
The Denpasar Search and Rescue Office received a request for assistance at 20:15 WITA from residents of Kangkang Hamlet. In response, seven personnel from the Karangasem Search and Rescue Post were dispatched to the scene.
The evacuation efforts took place from 20:55 WITA to 21:15 WITA. The joint SAR team used extrication equipment to free the victim from the wreckage. After successfully removing the body, the remains of Sudarma were transported to Karangasem Regional Hospital by an ambulance from Abang Health Center.
The evacuation operation involved personnel from the Karangasem Search and Rescue Post, Karangasem BPBD, Abang Police, Karangasem Fire Department, PLN Karangasem Unit, Abang Health Center, and local residents. TS-01
