The Earth Hour 2026 celebration in Ubud took on a different form. More than just turning off the lights for one hour, Bambu Indah presented an immersive experience titled “The Garden Journey,” inviting guests to reconnect with the earth through nature, food, and culture.
Renowned as one of the finest hotels in Ubud, Bambu Indah—owned by John Hardy and Cynthia Hardy—has never done things halfway when it comes to sustainability. Its reputation is global, from being named one of TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places to ranking third in the world in TripAdvisor’s One of a Kind Experiences. In the spirit of Earth Hour, the resort curated an experience that was not only exclusive but also deeply reflective.
The journey began upon arrival, where guests were welcomed with house-fermented kombucha—a simple symbol of sustainable living. The experience then flowed into a permaculture discussion session with Justin Robertshaw, a world-class permaculture design consultant, who shared insights into harmonious farming practices and the organic philosophy that underpins Bambu Indah.
From theory to practice, guests were invited to explore the organic garden. Here, the essence of Earth Hour became tangible—not merely symbolic, but present in every aspect of life. The appetizers were sourced directly from the garden, featuring fresh leaves, grilled lemongrass vegetables, and radishes served in terracotta dishes, reflecting the intimate connection between soil and sustenance.
As night fell, the atmosphere grew more intimate. Acoustic melodies by Tritala accompanied a ten-course dining experience crafted by Michelin-starred plant-based chef Alejandro Cancino. Each dish told a story of the journey from garden to table, from herbal broths and seasonal vegetables to plant-based interpretations of classic dishes, culminating in tropical fruit-based desserts.
The highlight of the Earth Hour celebration came as the lights were dimmed. Guests lit candles throughout the garden— a simple yet meaningful gesture of respect for the earth. In the contemplative glow, a Balinese shadow puppet performance unfolded, blending art, culture, and spirituality into an immersive finale.
More than just an event, “The Garden Journey” became Bambu Indah’s way of translating Earth Hour into a lived experience—inviting guests not only to understand, but to truly feel the importance of living in harmony with nature.
